Sun Im Hensel

November 14, 1935 ~ December 22, 2021 (age 86)

Sun Im Hensel, also known as "Sue," died peacefully by her husband’s side in her daughter's home in Bellevue, WA on December 22, 2021, at the age of 86. Sue was born Sun Im (pronounced Soon-Eem) Chong on November 14, 1935, in Mok Po, South Korea. She was one of 6 children who lost their parents early in life as they endured the ravages of the Korean War. As a young woman in Korea, Sue worked in a men's custom clothing store. She met her future husband, Walter Ellsworth Hensel, an army serviceman stationed in Korea, during a dance. The two continued to meet up for coffee and tea before dances, and eventually married on December 28, 1971. December 28, 2021 would have been Walter and Sue's 50-year wedding anniversary.

Sue enjoyed early married life with Walter in Korea. In 1976, she embarked on a new adventure by moving to the United States with Walter and their youngest daughter. In 1977, she and Walter bought a family home in Copperas Cove, Texas. There, they spent many happy years raising their three children, and eventually enjoyed retirement in the very same home.

Sue was a devoted wife and mother who loved cooking and classical music. After her children left home, she was an active senior and enjoyed traveling with her husband and extended family. For many years, they took RV visits to stunning sites in North America such as Niagara Falls and Mount Rushmore. They also enjoyed exploring Texas destinations, including a special trip to the Alamo with their oldest daughter. In 2003, Sue made her first trip back to South Korea since leaving in 1976, where she reunited with her Korean family. In her last years of life, Sue also spent time enjoying the Pacific Northwest where her youngest daughter, son-in-law and two of her grandchildren now reside.

Sue is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Walter Ellsworth Hensel (84) and her 3 children, Sherry Hensel Barnett (59), Walter Ellsworth Hensel, Jr. (54), and Tammy Cecilia Hensel (46). She also leaves a legacy of 7 beautiful grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She was loved and cherished by all and will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be held for Sue at Heritage Funeral Home in Harker Heights on Friday, December 31 from 5-8pm. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 1 from 10-11:30am at Heritage Funeral Home, followed by her burial at Killeen Memorial Cemetery, at 12pm.

Masks kindly requested at all events.
